Interview with Sascha Pierro (Marquess)

Sascha Pierro is a German-Italian singer, songwriter and producer, well-known for being a vocalist of the band Marquess. In 2007 their song "Vayamos compañeros" became very popular in Europe, especially in Poland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. They already released eight successful albums and had a chance to perform in Poland multiple times. In the interview, Sascha Pierro is talking about the beginning of his musical career, his memories from the Eurovision Song Contest and Polish gigs, new album and plans for the future.

You became popular as a member of a German band Marquess, but you were a singer long before the group was founded. How did you fall in love with music and decide to become a professional singer?

When I was 14 years old, I started playing keyboards. It was not until the age of 18 that a beloved band was looking for a singer. I always wanted to sing, but had not dared to do it before. That worked quite well and from then on I only stood on stage as a singer. Sometimes things come on their own. Then it continued with different styles of music. And I tried to figure out in which genre I felt most comfortable.

In 2003 you performed solo a song "Wenn Grenzen Fallen" and in 2008 "La histeria" with Marquess on the German elimination for the Eurovision Song Contest. What are your memories from this contest? Do you think it is a good way of promoting young and promising musicians?

Yes, in 2003 I released my first real solo album. I composed and produced almost everything in German language. Some songs were also in Italian language, which is the language of my father. At the time, there were not as many digital platforms as today to bring music to the public. Facebook, Instagram did not exist yet. Youtube was also still far away. With my German project, but also later with Marquess I participated in the Eurovision Song Contest. That was very exciting and also very important for me and us. This allowed us to reach a large audience.

Today, I'm not such a big fan of contests anymore. There are too many variations where the singers are in the background and only the TV format is important. I think that's a pity. If you are good, you definitely have the chance to be heard. But do not expect too much. Anyone who believes in himself and is hardworking and even trying to stand on many stages, has definitely a chance to get known without being a casting show or to be heard.

As a member of Marquess you are well-known for singing in Spanish, but you are a German band. Why did you decide to sing songs in Spanish language?

When we started with Marquess, we were not really a band, but rather a writer and producer team. We should write a commercial song for the Hannover Airport. Because the 2006 Football World Cup was also held in Hannover, we wanted to compose a song in four different languages: Italian, German, English and Spanish. In the end we liked Spanish best and we released the song ourselves because we had a good feeling with the song. The name of the song was "El temperamento"! It became our first radio hit in Germany. Spanish is a world language and it has a wonderful sound. As a half-Italian, I've always had something for this language, as it is not far from Spanish. That was the beginning of Marquess. And it goes on!

In 2007 Marquess released a song "Vayamos compañeros" which became popular all over Europe. How did you react to such a sudden success and what in your opinion made this song so famous?

Yes, "Vayamos compañeros" was our second single and we've had a huge success. From there on it started really with Marquess. We reached gold and platinum with the accompanying album "Frenetica". The single reached Top 10 in ten countries. That was very exciting and we were not prepared for it. But it felt really great and we are very proud of it!

You had a chance to perform in Poland multiple times and meet your Polish listeners. Do you remember any special fan experiences from Poland? What do you like most about your Polish fans?

That's right! We played in quite a lot... if not all Polish TV shows. Great! We were always received very warmly. Although it was a very stressful time with many appointments, we always felt very comfortable in Poland. And yes... the chicas and the food is very good in Poland :) That was really a great time with Polish people. Even after that we were there a few times. We hope to come back soon! What we liked in Poland was that the people there were not pretentious, but rather grounded! Like us!

On 6 April 2018 you released your eighth studio album "En Movimiento" promoted by singles "Suavecito", "Tic Tac" and "Calle del ritmo". How can you describe your main sources of musical inspiration while making this album?

Our current album was mainly written in Havana, Cuba. We have collaborated with various musicians from Latin America. On several songs there are guest singers and rappers. That was really something new and it was very creative. Each song was created in a team with a Latino! So this album sounds different than the albums before! It was a great and exciting time in Cuba and we met a lot of new people and musicians! We also shot almost 6 or 7 videos there to capture the mood.

Apart from being a talented musician, you are also a music producer - for example you worked for a Swiss-Albanian artist Patrick Nuo. Can you tell us something more about this aspect of your work?

Since I started with singing and playing keyboards, of course I also composed a lot and later always worked in a team. This creates many ideas and songs that often fit to other artists. So we always introduced these songs to other singers! I do, or we still do that. Only in recent years we've had a lot to do with Marquess, so we wrote for our records!

What are your main plans and aims for the foreseeable future?

We play a lot of concerts and mix our program with songs out of eight albums. It's fun and we're always excited about new fans at our concerts. This is the plan for the next year. Of course we hope to come to Poland soon! Otherwise we are blissfully happy and hope that it goes on and on!
