Drew Ryan Scott is a talented singer and
songwriter from Houston, Texas and a member of American pop band After Romeo.
Many songs written by him were featured in Disney movies – you can hear them
for example on the soundtracks from „Hannah Montana”, „Shake It Up” and
„Starstruck”. In the interview Drew is talking about his songwriting for
Disney, work with different artists and the best things about being in a band.
Enjoy it!
You are one of the authors of many songs from
Disney Channel movies and TV series, the most popular being "Gonna Get
This" by Hannah Montana and "L.A. Baby" by Jonas Brothers. How
did your music adventure with Disney start and what was the most exciting thing
about writing songs for this company?
I just fell into it. A producer I work with
heavily received a pitch idea for a Disney song and we started writing
immediately for it. We got the song placed and started doing more and more
songs for Disney. Disney is such a great company. They’re super friendly and
they work fast. I've recorded with so many great artists during Disney
projects. That would probably be the most fun part. I loved the "Make Your
Mark" theme song featured on Disney's Shake It Up: Make Your Mark. I got
to sing it as well as write it. That was really cool!
I was a bit surprised and I think a lot of
teenagers were too that you were actually the singing voice of Christopher
Wilde (played by Sterling Knight) in "Starstruck". Tell me about your
songwriting and vocal recording for this amazing movie.
For Starstruck, I was originally producing the
vocals for the song “Starstruck,” but then there was a change in the casting
after we recorded the song. That's when Sterling came in as the lead role.
Filming was supposed to start the following week after he was cast so he had to
learn the script and learn all the songs very quickly, which was basically
impossible. So I helped out.
During your prolific songwriting career you
have worked with Big Time Rush, Willow Smith, Jedward and a lot of K-pop
artists from Asia. Which of these collaborations were the most interesting and
unusual for you? What is the most difficult part about writing songs for so
many different musicians?
I have had around 70-80 #1 releases across the
world. It has been awesome. I write songs everyday...in fact I'm in a studio
right now working on a song!
I've seen it all when recording with different
artists. Some come to the studio very professional and ready to go. Some are
super nervous and scared. Some show up drunk or heavily under an influence. You
never know what you're gonna get. It's easiest when it's just you and the
artist. Extra people in the room always cause problems and mess up the focus.
The most difficult part about writing songs
for so many different musicians is losing my voice. I write so many songs and I
sing all the "demo" versions of the songs. So my voice has to
constantly work. Most people record and perform and they only do it every so
often. I do it every day. I’m recording 2-3 songs a day so my voice has to be
in constant good shape.
Now you are focused on your band After Romeo -
you released an album called "The Story Continues…" in 2015 and
"Good Things EP" this year. What is the best part of working together
as a band? Do you often argue about your style of music, the direction you go
and so on?
It's a lot of fun! We like to hang out and
have a good time. We are very proud of the music we do, but it's a lot of work.
We don't really argue about direction because we all get to put in our two
cents.
Your new single "Good Things" is a
song about a young man who is trying to make a girl fall in love with him.
Could you tell us something more about the story behind this song?
"Good Things" was featured in the
worldwide Samsung commercial so we wanted to release it for everyone to hear
the full version globally. It's about a guy who knows he can give you the
"good things," but maybe you don't realize he can because you're too
caught up in someone else's poisonous web.
After Romeo has been travelling around the
world with their music for three years and more great gigs are on the way. Can
we expect you and your bandmates in Europe soon? Would you like to come to
Poland?
We would love to come to Europe and Poland.
Love it over there. I've been there many times and it's so peaceful and pretty!
