Drew Seeley is an actor, singer and dancer from Canada, well-known for the role of Joey Parker in "Another Cinderella Story" and singing as Troy Bolton during High School Musical: The Concert Tour. He was the co-author of the song "Get'cha Head in the Game" from "High School Musical". He also performed in two Broadway musicals "The Little Mermaid" and "Jersey Boys" and recently released his third studio album "Downtime". In the interview, Drew Seeley is talking about his work for Disney, musical inspirations and plans for the future.
You have been interested in music and theatre since childhood and in 2005 you started writing music for Disney movies and TV shows. How did you fall in love with performing and what was your first professional singing experience?
I fell in love with performing when I was 11. I was cast in the ensemble of the musical revival of "Show Boat" in Toronto. It was my after-school job for a year, singing, dancing, acting, and I was utterly hooked after that.
As a talented musician, you recorded many songs the Walt Disney Company such as "Dance with Me" for "Cheetah Girls 2" and "Dance for Life" for "Shake It Up". You were also performing Troy Bolton's songs on the first "High School Musical" and during High School Musical: The Concert Tour. What are your most memorable moments from working for Disney and what is a recipe for a good Disney song?
I wish there was an easy recipe for a good song. But it's the unique touch each one due to the specific alchemy of its creators. And you never know! We didn't expect "Get'cha Head in the Game" to explode the way it did. Writing that song was a highlight for me. Also touring South America with the concert tour, and meeting Michael Jackson backstage before our Las Vegas show.
In 2008 you starred alongside Selena Gomez in a teen musical comedy "Another Cinderella Story" and in 2009 you played Prince Eric in the Disney Broadway Musical "The Little Mermaid". Do you remember your favourite fairy-tales from childhood?
Yeah, I loved old movies like "The Sword in the Stone", and classics like "Dumbo" and "The Lion King". So many good ones.
What is the most exciting thing for you about performing in a musical? Was it difficult for you to combine dancing, singing and acting and do it all the best you can?
I started in theatre before anything else, so it felt comfortable, like coming back home. It's always difficult initially, learning a new show (as it should be). But pretty soon you fall into a groove and it's one of the most rewarding kinds of performing.
On 29 March 2018 you released your third studio album "Downtime", which is promoted by two singles "Battle Lines" and "She May Be The One". How can you describe your main musical influences and inspirations?
All over the map, but lately have been listening to a lot of Anderson Paak, Leisure, Tom Misch, Childish Gambino and Lion Babe. But going back, I'd say Michael Jackson, George Michael and The Beach Boys are big for me too.
You are from Canada, the land of maple syrup, moose and hockey. What typical personality traits of Canadian do you have and what do you like most about your hometown?
I definitely apologize too much, for things out of my hands entirely. I think that's a Canadian thing :) My hometown was quaint, we lived on a court, and all the other families had kids around my age. It was a pretty awesome, yet cold, place to grow up in Whitby.
I guess that singing, acting and dancing are not your only activities. How do you spend your free time when you are not in the studio or on set?
Hiking and running. Love exploring any new city or the hills on foot. And I'm a huge foodie, and coffee freak, so shocking my taste buds and learning about other cultures are my favorite things to do.
Can you tell us something more about your plans for the future?
Yet unwritten. Madly in love with my amazing wife of five years, Amy Paffrath. Hopefully children in the near future. But lots more travel until then, and new music, movies, whatever comes along! Keep an eye out for "Disrupted", "The Devil in I.T.", and "Christmas By The Book", all scheduled for release later this year!
