On 7 March 2017 you released your debut EP “Rain”, which is promoted by a powerful pop-rock song “1000 Years”. How did your adventure with singing start? When did you have your first musical performance?
About 6 years ago, I decided to take guitar lessons, and in my 3rd lesson my teacher Mike told me that the school offered a rock band class. He knew I liked to sing, so he suggested I try it, not realizing it was my dream! So like 8 weeks later I sang in a band (and played guitar) at Kenny’s Castaways on Bleecker Street in NYC. I almost threw up I was so nervous, but I did it! So I took a few more classes, then formed a cover band with my friends, and then just kept on going.
"1000 Years" is a song about how the past affects our present life and what we have learn from our ancestors. How can you describe your inspirations and influences in writing lyrics?
I am fascinated with human nature, so I think about why people do the things they do all the time, and that’s what I write about a lot. Certainly in the case of “1000 Years” I did. I just feel like if people slowed down a bit and thought about their place in the universe, we would all be a lot better off. I happen to believe in past lives, so there’s a little bit of that in there. We have made so much progress as humans, but in some way, we have made so little. I guess the song just asks people to think about all that has been done by those before us to make progress, and ask themselves what they would have done then and is it different than what they would do now.
While working on “Rain” and your upcoming longplay, you had an honour to work with Sterling Campbell and Gerry Leonard, who previously worked with the legendary David Bowie. What are your memories from these amazing collaborations?
Honor indeed. Although they have become friends of mine, I still pinch myself every day with regard to this! It was amazing. Gerry came into the studio with an array of guitars and this spaceship of a pedal board. He listened through to the first song and then added layer, added another, added what was needed, and we moved on to the next. He is so unique and talented, not to mention hilarious. The dimension he added to the songs just blew my mind. And Sterling is just off the hook amazing. He listened through and then just laid down amazing tracks, gave us a couple of options, and they were all phenomenal. It was so much fun working with him. They make it so easy. I have also played live with them, which is a whole other thing. I learned from Sterling how keep things real in this industry, while still moving through it and moving forward. Playing with him, you feel like you are floating on air, that’s the best way I can describe it. You are secure with him there, yet you feel free to do your job. Playing with Gerry is similar in that you just have these beautiful sounds all around you while you work through your lyrics. Simply put, they are great musicians, great people and I am forever grateful for not only their work but their support. One of my favorite memories of working with Gerry was when I asked him, “when do you know the song is done?”. He replied, “There’s input and there’s output. It’s time for output.” I really was what I needed to hear at that moment.
Apart from being a talented musician, you are also a devoted mother, so I guess it may be difficult for you to combine a music career and motherhood. What are your tips to manage your time effectively and have some time for yourself as well? Do you have some other hobbies besides singing?
I don’t know if I have figured out all the tricks yet! It’s hard for sure, there are days when I just have to accept that stuff I planned is just not getting done. Music is incredibly time consuming, and I hate missing anything my kids do. I love to exercise so I try really hard to work out a few times a week. I have kind of given up some of my hobbies like tennis and making stuff by hand, just because the focus on music is worth it. I would rather spend all of those hours attending my kids events and helping to organize their lives. I love my friends and family, so I spend time going out with them as often as I can.
You have already played some concerts in your hometown New York, but I know that you plan to show your skills also in different cities. Is there a chance to see you in Europe soon?
Yes there is definitely talk of playing in the UK. I think late fall perhaps, and I am very much looking forward to that! And I will definitely be playing in the US outside of NYC in late summer and fall as well.
Your debut full-length album is on the way as well as more gigs promoting your new music. What can we expect from your record and what are your plans for the foreseeable future?
At the moment we are reproducing and tweaking several of the current tracks, and I am writing new material. The EP and album will be similar in that have an alternative edge keeping that rock element in there, but in combination with current electronic sounds. I will be releasing a couple of singles this summer, then the full EP in the fall.
